SYNVISC INJECTIONS (Hylan G-F 20)
Synvisc is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) pain of the knee in patients who have failed to find relief by conservative nonpharmalogic therapy and simple analgesics (example: acetaminophen). Synvisc injection was developed and is manufactured by the Genzyme Corporation. Synvisc provides lubrication to the knee and acts as a "shock absorber" for the knee joint. Synvisc is simalar to synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints and is made from a substance called hyaluronan that is found in normal joint fluid.

How it is Given Synvisc is injected by a health care professional directly into the knee joint three times, 7 days apart, over a period of 15 days (Day 1, 8, and 15). To get the best results from the injection, the health care professional will remove the diseased osteoarthritic synovial fluid from your knee prior to the Synvisc injection. It is injected into the knee to help restore the cushioning effect and lubrication of normal, healthy synovial fluid and helps reduce pain from osteoarthritis. This treatment is refered to as viscosupplementation.
Most patients feel the greatest pain relief 8 to 12 weeks after beginning treatment of Synvisc. Your doctor may suggest for you to temporarily avoid strenuous activity.
