Synvisc is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) pain of the knee in patients who have failed to find relief by conservative nonpharmalogic therapy and simple analgesics (example: acetaminophen). Synvisc injection was developed and is manufactured by the Genzyme Corporation. Synvisc provides lubrication to the knee and acts as a "shock absorber" for the knee joint. Synvisc is simalar to synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints and is made from a substance called hyaluronan that is found in normal joint fluid.
