Patient Information for Generic Zestril
Lisinopril (lyse-IN-oh-pril)
Generic Zestril treats high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. Also used in the first few days after a heart attack. Generic Zestril helps to reduce the risk of death by making the heart more stable after the attack. Generic Zestril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
Brand Name(s):Zestril, Prinivil, Lisinopril There may be other brand names for this medicine. When Generic Zestril Should Not Be Used: You should not use Generic Zestril if you have had an allergic reaction to lisinopril or other blood pressure medicines, such as Accupril®, Altace®, Lotensin®, Lotrel®, Monopril®, or Vasotec®. You should not use Generic Zestril if you are pregnant, or if you have hereditary or idiopathic angioedema. How to Use Generic Zestril: (Tablet) Your doctor will tell you how much of Generic Zestril to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more Generic Zestril or use it more often than your doctor tells you to. You may take Generic Zestril with or without food. If a dose is missed: If you miss a dose or forget to use your Generic Zestril, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra Generic Zestril to make up for a missed dose.
Storage and Disposal of Generic Zestril: Store Generic Zestril in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any outdated Generic Zestril or medicine no longer needed. Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone. Drugs and Foods to Avoid: Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Make sure your doctor knows if you are using lithium, gold injections, or a diuretic ("water pill"), such as amiloride (Midamor®, Moduretic®), chlorthalidone (Thalitone®), eplerenone (Inspra®), furosemide (Lasix®), spironolactone (Aldactazide®, Aldactone®), or triamterene (Dyazide®, Dyrenium®, Maxzide®). Your doctor will need to know if you are using insulin or a diabetes medicine that you take by mouth, such as glipizide, glyburide, metformin, Actos®, Amaryl®, Avandia®, Glucotrol®, or Glucophage®. Tell your doctor if you are using a pain or arthritis medicine (sometimes called NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Advil®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Feldene®, or Voltaren®. You should not use medicines or salt substitutes that contain potassium (including supplements) without asking your doctor.
Warnings While Using Generic Zestril: Using Generic Zestril while you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control to keep from getting pregnant. If you think you have become pregnant while using Generic Zestril, tell your doctor right away. Make sure your doctor knows if you are breast feeding, or if you have kidney disease, heart disease, heart valve problems, liver disease, diabetes, or lupus. Tell your doctor about any allergic reaction you have had to any drug, especially if the reaction caused you to have swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Generic Zestril may make you dizzy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert. Dizziness may be worse if you lose too much water from your body. You can lose water by sweating, having diarrhea, or vomiting. Tell your doctor if Generic Zestril makes you feel lightheaded or dizzy after you have been vomiting or had diarrhea. Generic Zestril may lower your blood sugar. You should check your blood sugar more often during the first month you take Generic Zestril, and then on a regular basis. Your doctor will need to check your blood at regular visits while you are using Generic Zestril. Be sure to keep all appointments. Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using Generic Zestril. You may need to stop using Generic Zestril several days before having surgery or medical tests. If you stop using Generic Zestril, your blood pressure may go up. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Even if you feel well, do not stop using Generic Zestril without asking your doctor. Possible Side Effects While Using Generic Zestril: Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing; blistering, peeling, red skin rash; change in how much or how often you urinate; chest pain; confusion, body weakness, uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath, or numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, or lips; dark-colored urine or pale stools; fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat; fever, chills, sore throat, and body aches; lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, shakiness, or hunger; nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; rapid weight gain; swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness; yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor: Dry cough; headache; mild skin rash or itching.
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by Generic Zestril, tell your doctor.
